Ernest Muehlmatt, renowned carver, and first-prize winner of the coveted
world class ribbons, spends 3,000 hours a year in his studio roughing,
grinding, refining, burning, painting, and perfecting wildfowl. He's carved
and painted over 3,000
chickadees, a bird that's become somewhat of
a trademark for him. In addition to carving thousands of chickadees,
robins,and blue jays, and countless other songbirds, Muehlmatt has

Roger Schroeder, well known himself for documenting the work of today's
best known wildfowl carvers, unfolds Muehlmatt's story, the events of his
life, his early interest in art, growing up in Media, Pennsylvania, working
in the family's florist business, and his first trip to a bird carving exhibition
in Salisbury, Maryland, in 1968. Blended in with the fascinating detail of
Ernie's background is the expertise on painting, washes, feather flicking
and burning, the trademarks that have made him Famous. Details on
composition, design, proportion, balance, and line round out Part I of
the book.

Roger Schroeder has combined his talents as woodworker, photographer,

and HOW TO CARVE WILDFOWL BOOK 2. His many woodworking and
woodcarving articles have appeared in such magazines as Fine
Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding, The Woodworker's Journal, and
Waterfowl Carving and Collecting. A professional writer and lecturer on
how to turn wood into houses, sculpture, and furniture, Schroeder lives in
Amityville, New York.

Ernest Muehlmatt has won the ultimate carving awards, the world class
blue ribbon once for Decorative Life size category and twice for Miniatures.
Ernie, who has carved for 18 years, now lives in Salisbury, Maryland.
